openEO Platform is a cloud-based platform for processing and analysing large amounts of Earth Observation imagery. It gives access to large, global archives of Earth Observation imagery including those of the Sentinel 1 and 2 missions. The openEO Platform provides intuitive programming libraries in Python, R and Javascript to process a wide variety of earth observation datasets. This large-scale data access and processing is performed on multiple infrastructures, which all support the openEO API, allowing use cases to perform exploratory research or large-scale production of EO-derived maps and information.

openEO Platform is being developed with a key ambition to match real world requirements of the EO user community. To support this, Early Adopters have started utilising the platform since the public launch at the ESA Phi Week in October 2021, providing critical feedback primarily through the userforum. An important next milestone will be the openEO Platform activities at the ESA Living Planet Symposium (LPS) in Bonn, Germany (23-27 May 2022). Besides various presentations in science sessions, demos and classroom training sessions, the LPS will host the first openEO Platform User Consultation Meeting. Early Adopters, free tier users and LPS attendees will be offered the possibility to present and discuss feedback, propose and vote for new features and help shape the evolution of the platform. To further strengthen the feedback loop with the community, ESA is sponsoring research grants for more in-depth investigation of the platform’s utility for the implementation of various scientific workflows.

Research grants of 2500 euros are now available to researchers who want to explore openEO Platform for a short duration (February – June 2022). To obtain a research grant, researchers should write a proposal of maximum 1000 words to explain the motivation, aim and scope of the research. It should include:

  • The application domain and methods to be used
  • The EO and other geospatial data that will be used (sensor, spatial extent, temporal extent, spatial and temporal resolution)
  • The expected outcome
  • A confirmation that results of the research grant will be presented (in presence, as an online presentation, or in the form of a PDF presentation) at the Living Planet Symposium 2022

Research grants will be paid out after presentation of the findings and results at the LPS openEO Platform User Consultation Meeting. A jury will evaluate research grant holder investigations and the most valuable efforts will be awarded with valuable (6-, 9- and 12-months) openEO Platform licence packages. Proposals can be submitted from now until 15-03-2022 as PDF via e-mail to openeo-platform@eodc.eu. Decision on approval will follow within a week after submission of the proposal.
